What is the user agent?
The user agent is a text string your browser sends with every request, stating its name, version, engine and operating system. Websites use it to adapt content or for statistics. For historical reasons almost every browser claims to be "Mozilla" and many include "Chrome" and "Safari", so it has to be interpreted carefully.
Why does my user agent say Windows 10 when I have Windows 11?
Modern browsers have frozen part of the user agent to make tracking harder: Windows 11 still shows up as "Windows NT 10.0". To give the right answer, this page also reads the Client Hints (navigator.userAgentData) when the browser provides them.
Why should I know which browser I have?
It is useful to check whether your browser is up to date, to give accurate details to technical support when something does not work, or for developers who need to reproduce a bug on the same browser and system.
