Test the speed of your Internet connection
Check the real speed of your connection in a few seconds: latency (ping), download speed and upload speed. The test runs in your browser against our server and needs no installation.
How does the speed test work?
The test runs in three stages. First it measures latency by sending several small requests to the server and computing the round-trip time (median, in milliseconds) and the jitter, i.e. the variation between one request and the next. Then it measures download speed by fetching files of random data over several parallel connections for a few seconds, and finally upload speed by sending random data generated in your browser.
Results are given in Mbps (megabits per second), the same unit ISPs use to advertise their plans. To convert to megabytes per second (MB/s) divide by 8: a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most 12.5 MB per second.
What is a good speed?
- Latency: under 20 ms is excellent (fibre); 20–50 ms is normal; above 100 ms you will notice it in video calls and online gaming.
- Download: 25 Mbps is enough for smooth 4K video; from 100 Mbps several people can use the connection at the same time without issues.
- Upload: matters for video calls, cloud backups and live streaming. Fibre connections are usually symmetric; ADSL and many mobile connections upload much more slowly than they download.
Why the result may be lower than what you pay for
- Wi-Fi: the most common cause. Distance to the router, walls and interference cut speed dramatically. To measure the real connection, plug the computer in with a cable.
- Other devices: downloads, updates, streaming or cloud backups on other devices in the house share the same bandwidth.
- Computer or browser limits: old computers, extensions or antivirus software scanning traffic, and 100 Mbps network cards cap the result.
- Distance to the server: the test runs against one specific server; the further away it is, the higher the latency and the lower the maximum measurable speed.
Privacy
The test only transfers meaningless random data. No personal data or files from your computer are sent or stored, and the results are not saved on the server.
